Centennial Project Ideas

The New Mexico Centennial Task Force and Steering Committee encourage communities across the state to develop projects for the New Mexico Centennial, or incorporate existing or planned events. The Centennial Planners have identified  four key areas of interest for the type of programs they will consider as Official Events.  While funding is not available at this time, a schedule of events will be posted on this website as we are made aware of them. Here are some guidelines to help your community or organization develop and implement a successful Centennial event of its own.

As communities plan Centennial events, important goals might include the following:

  • Learning more about NM history
  • Taking action to improve NM over the next 100 years
  • Bringing people together to commemorate the past
  • Stimulating tourism and economic development

Types of Centennial Events and Activities:

Each community will create events that are meaningful to them. Some types of ideas may be the following:

  • Public art creation and display
  • Interpretive signage projects for walks, hikes, and tours of buildings and structures that existed before or during the statehood period
  • Production of musical, theater, readings, poetry events, or other performing arts programs relating to New Mexico history and the advent of statehood
  • Parties or receptions honoring and recognizing local Centenarians and/or descendants of people who played an important role in New Mexico's ascent to statehood
  • Seminar or conference around NM history and your community
  • Environmental project (tree planting, clean-up, etc.)
  • Educational programs for children and/or adults
  • Sporting events commemorating the Centennial
  • Restoration projects of historic edifices, trails, resources, artifacts, or other natural and built environments
  • Publication and/or archive articles related to events and people pertinent to the Centennial
  • Parades, community parties and other festive events with local dignitaries or celebrities
  • Have another good idea? Let us know!

Please note: to become an official Centennial event (approved and promoted by Centennial Planners) you must submit a detailed proposal to the Centennial Steering Committee, which will meet four times per year to select Centennial Projects. Proposal submission constitutes no commitment by the Centennial to funding or project implementation.

At the same time the Centennial Planners wish to commemorate New Mexico's past, the focus is on honoring the present - and preserving the future - of our Land of Enchantment. Please consider ways you can make your event have a low environmental impact, and engage the services and goods of New Mexico-based producers and fabricants wherever possible.
