Youngsters enjoying a New Mexico State University homecoming parade. NMSU is a land-grant university, with its main campus in Las Cruces. It was founded in 1888 as Las Cruces College and in 1889 become known as "New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts." It serves approximately 17,000 students and is the only research-extensive, land-grant institution classified as Hispanic serving by the federal government.
