The Santuario de Chimayo, a Roman Catholic church in Northern New Mexico that is considered one of the most important Catholic pilgrimage centers in the United States. El Santuario is often referred to as the "Lourdes of America," with pilgrims coming to pray, meditate, and collect holy sand from the chapel. On Good Friday, devout pilgrims travel hours and for some, overnight, from Santa Fe, Albuquerque, and elsewhere, to El Santuario.
