Woman at Isleta Pueblo, 1926. "Isleta" is Spanish for "little island," and the land saw its first Spanish Mission founded in 1612: The Spanish Mission of San Agustín de la Isleta . During the Pueblo Revolt of 1680, many of the pueblo people fled to Hopi settlements in Arizona, and others headed southwards with the Spaniards to El Paso. Many returned to Isleta from Arizona after the revolt, with Hopi spouses. Today, Isleta Pueblo also encompasses the Oraibi and Chicale tribal communities.
