Young fans make some noise at the NMSU 2003 homecoming football game. NMSU athletes are referred to as "Aggies," in reference to the University's original name: New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. For many years, however, the men's and women's sports teams had separate nicknames: men’s teams were known as the Aggies while the women’s teams were known as the Roadrunners. The two athletic departments merged in 1970.
